Ekurhuleni, a Tsonga word, means "a place of peace"- symbolic of the diversity of the new city and of its vision of an equitable and progressive community. Ekurhuleni produce 23% of the Gross Geographic Product of Gauteng.
The region has approximately 2.4 million residents and comprises some 190 000 hectares of land with a business sector boasting more than 41 000 industries alone. The region is responsible for producing about 23% of the Gross Geographic Product of Gauteng, which is Sub-Saharan Africa, most economically powerful region.
